The holidays give us plenty of reasons to gather. A Halloween game night with friends. A church small group’s Christmas party. Family staying a little longer around the table. Getting everyone together is one part of it; finding a good way to start talking is another.

That’s what we built While We’re Here for: a conversation card app for iPhone and iPad that gives the people in the room a question to start with. Now we’re using the holiday season to update its appearance with Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas themes.

The images in this post use real app screenshots from our development build, presented in promotional layouts. They preview the seasonal update; they aren’t an announcement that the themes are available in the App Store version yet.

How Not Just Sundays inspired While We’re Here

We came across Not Just Sundays, a physical conversation card game built around faith and face-to-face connection. The idea clicked with us: give a group a thoughtful question, then give people room to answer it.

But when we went looking to order it, we kept finding it sold out. We wanted something we could bring to a church group or another gathering without waiting for a restock, placing an online order, and then waiting for a box to arrive.

That experience became the starting point for While We’re Here. We wanted a conversation game you could keep on the phone you already carry, ready when the group is together.

While We’re Here is our independent app with original questions. Not Just Sundays inspired us to build in this category; we aren’t affiliated with its creators, and this isn’t an official app or a digital edition of their cards. The stock problem describes what we encountered then, rather than a claim about their availability today.

I wrote more about the original app in the While We’re Here launch post. This next update is about making it feel at home at the gatherings already on our calendars.

Why we’re adding holiday themes to our apps

A seasonal update is a chance to revisit the moment someone uses an app. For While We’re Here, that moment is a gathering, which makes the holidays a natural fit.

We can dress the app for the occasion while keeping the question easy to read. Halloween gets pumpkin colors and small autumn decorations. Christmas gets evergreen, cranberry, and ornaments. Thanksgiving brings a warm harvest palette. Each has a light and dark appearance, and the original Classic look stays available.

In the update we’re preparing, every appearance theme is included for everyone, including people using the free cards. You choose it yourself in Settings → Theme, any time of year. Changing the theme keeps your cards, favorites, progress, and saved round.

These are appearance themes. They don’t add a separate Halloween trivia pack or a Christmas question deck. That’s useful to know if you’re looking for a holiday game: the same conversation cards get a seasonal setting.

A Halloween conversation game for a quieter party moment

If you’re looking for Halloween apps for a gathering, a conversation game can fit the part of the evening when people are sitting down between activities. It doesn’t need to take over the whole party.

The Halloween theme uses warm pumpkin and plum colors, leaves, and little decorative details. The question stays in the center. One of the cards shown below asks, “What made you feel like a kid again recently?” That’s an easy place to begin on a night already full of costumes, candy, and childhood memories.

For a fall church gathering, friends’ game night, or a family evening, start with Life & Laughter. Read one question, let anyone who wants to answer take a turn, and move on when the conversation feels finished. Passing is fine.

A Christmas conversation game for church groups and family gatherings

Christmas parties bring together people who may not have talked much since last year. A question can make it easier to move past the familiar updates about work and how busy December has become.

The Christmas theme gives the app evergreen accents and a small garland of ornaments. The card below asks, “What’s a family tradition that would sound strange to someone outside your family?” It’s a useful starting point for stories at a Christmas dinner or a small-group party.

For a church Christmas party, Faith & Questions or Gratitude & Prayer can open a more reflective conversation. For a gathering with different beliefs and backgrounds, Life & Laughter or People We Love gives you another place to start. Choose a deck that fits the people at your table.

How to play at your next gathering

You only need one person to open the app and read the cards aloud. Guests don’t need to download anything to join the conversation.

  1. Pick a deck. Start light, or choose a faith-focused deck for a group that wants that conversation.
  2. Draw a card and read it aloud. Let people answer at their own pace, with room to pass.
  3. Stay with a good conversation. There is no need to rush through the cards. Reveal an optional follow-up when the group wants to go deeper.
  4. Continue when you’re ready. Favorite a question you’d like to revisit, or pick up your saved round another time.

The app has 100 original cards across four decks. You can start with 25 free cards and write three custom cards. A one-time lifetime unlock opens the full library, unlimited custom cards, and named decks. The seasonal appearance update keeps those existing card limits in place.

Core play works offline once you’re set up, with your cards and play history stored on your device. Downloading the app and purchasing or restoring the unlock require an internet connection. You can read the current features and offer on the App Store listing.

Bring a question to the table

Not Just Sundays helped us see the value of a conversation card game. Running into sold-out stock gave us a reason to build our own app, with our own questions, so a group could start without waiting for a physical deck.

The holiday themes carry that idea into the next season. We want While We’re Here to feel welcoming at a Halloween gathering, a Christmas party, or an ordinary evening when people have a little time together.

Try While We’re Here on the App Store for the current conversation game, or visit the app page for more details. The screenshots above preview the seasonal update we’re preparing.

More than small talk. More than Sunday.
